Lizzie Heather, a freelance copywriter in Cornwall, talks about her love of languages and her experience with the Language Ladies.
Languages have always fascinated me. At primary school, I was lucky enough to have two ‘French’ French teachers and I remember so clearly the first time I heard them speaking together. I was completely mesmerised by the romance of the language, the husky tones and the mystery of a parallel word that, in that moment, only they shared. I didn’t understand a word they were saying, but I couldn’t stop listening.
Over the years my love of languages grew, and in 2009 I went on to study French and History at Lancaster University, a 4-year course which included a wonderful year abroad in Poitiers, France. Then, in 2014, I moved to Cornwall to start a new life in this salt-kissed county and began working as a freelance copywriter. Always reading, writing and playing with words, I eventually decided it was time to push my love affair with languages further. Then I came across the Language Ladies.
Meeting the Language Ladies
After discovering their fantastic language school in Cornwall (which also provides online lessons to students all over the world), I seized the opportunity to pursue a new challenge through the Language Ladies: Spanish lessons. For one morning every week, I hop into my car, enjoy a 20-minute drive through leafy Cornish lanes and arrive at my tutor’s home, always greeted with a warm welcome and delicious coffee.
A completely new language to me, learning Spanish is thrilling. The setting is relaxed and because the lessons are one-to-one, my language teacher (Julia) has created a bespoke lesson plan to suit my learning styles, interests and goals. As Julia has spoken in both Spanish and English from the start, I have always found myself equally challenged and supported and have been surprised how far I have come already.
“If you have ever wanted to learn a language, now’s the time!”
If you are interested in learning a language, either through the language school’s one-to-one lessons or online, I would whole-heartedly recommend the Language Ladies. Without all the pressure of a classroom environment, you can move at your own pace and reap the benefits of having a personal tutor. With extremely reasonably priced lessons that are always engaging and fun, you won’t just learn the language itself but also about new cultures and be a part of a superb network too.
